ELECTRONIC HOUSE CALL - July 17, 1998
OFF WE GO!
Margene and I leave for Europe on the 24th for the Effortless, Inc. annual meeting. (Frequent flyer miles are a GOOD
thing!) I will be checking e-mail from the other side of the pond but my response time may necessarily be a bit slower. As
an experiment, I plan to post a running travelogue on my website to highlight insights (and photos!) that might be of interest
to hospitality folks. Check out my website at www.restaurantdoctor.com/europe.html starting around the 27th.
PHONE SCAM ALERT
Richard Schenkar passed along this bit of advice in his Wednesday Wisdom message:
Scam alert--this has been verified with two phone companies. . . If anyone represents themselves as being from the phone
company and asks you to touch nine-zero-poundsign (or "90#"), refuse and hang up. This combination gives full access to
your telephone-number account to anyone . . . to make infinite phone calls. DO NOT PRESS "90#" FOR ANYONE!!
IT WORKS!
I received this note recently which highlights some of the things we have been talking about in EHC over the past few
months. I thought you would enjoy it and find a message that could help.
My name is Lori Larcom and I am a Sales Manager for an Olive Garden. I just want to say thank you for you articles at your web site. I think you hit the nail right on the head with your articles on There's Got to Be An Easier Way to do This. I have been in 4 different Olive Gardens and have worked with managers with all different styles. I personally have been criticized because I spend a lot of time talking to my employees (many times just on a personal level).
But my greatest feeling of accomplishment was when I was asked to make the transfer to my current store. I was told that they needed someone that would touch every employee in the building. They placed me in a difficult store because I believe in the great importance of each employee and that they do run the joint and not me.
It is very refreshing to read your materials and realize again, that my style of management is going to get me out of the weeds. And also, this difficult store has turned into a not so difficult store!
