ELECTRONIC HOUSE CALL - August 28, 1998
Greetings from the Florida Restaurant Show and the Foodservice Marketing War College. Orlando is lovely this time of year! A few thoughts in passing on a steamy Friday evening
STOP TRAINING
I attended the CHART Conference (Council of Hotel and Restaurant Trainers) on my way back from Europe and was
impressed to hear that the awareness was shifting from TRAINING people to DEVELOPING people (of which training
might be a part.) The difference is at once simple and profound -- rather than focusing just on job skills (which is what
most training does), we need to be providing with what each individual needs to reach his or her fullest potential. This
takes us past just job skills to people skills, even life skills. It signifies an acceptance of each staff member as a total
functioning human being, not just a flesh-and-blood machine to be programmed. It requires a high degree of respect and a
deep sense of service. This notion is worth a bit of reflection.
TELEMARKETING
If you want to get off the telemarketers' lists who call you at home, write to DMA Telephone Preference Service, PO Box
9014, Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014 and asked to be removed from their national solicitation lists. http://www.the-dma.org. For
a delightfully humorous dissertation on how to fend off telemarketers, look at http://www.restaurantdoctor.com/ehc/telemark.html.
GET A LIFE . . . REVISITED
Jim Laube and I are doing it again! "How to Increase Your Cash Flow by 50% and Get Your Life Back ... in 90 Days!"
will be offered from October 2-4 in Columbus, Ohio and October 10-12 in Charlotte, NC. For more information on the
content, go to www.restaurantdoctor.com/getalife.html. Space is limited.
As a final thought, send some kind thoughts to our colleagues who just got pounded by Hurricane Bonnie. Let's hope they can still salvage a bit of Labor Day weekend business!
