ELECTRONIC HOUSE CALL - November 27, 1998

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
I hope the day was good for you professionally and that you had a chance for some quality time with your family. Speaking of family, I was reminded yesterday of one of my favorite quotes from Richard Bach. In his book Illusions, he wrote: "The tie that binds your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each others lives. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof."

WATCH YOUR BACK
Menu maven Banger Smith http://www.menusforprofit.com reminds me that in the last two weeks, at least six Seattle area restaurants have been robbed at gunpoint just after closing. It might be a good idea to review your closing procedures before you become a statistic.

NETIQUETTE
You may have had the experience of receiving a message (usually a joke) that has been forwarded several times before being forwarded to you. You have to wade through several pages of addresses and cyber-babble to find the message itself. Does it drive you nuts? If so, don't be guilty of the same thing. If you choose to pass a forwarded message along, do everyone a favor -- delete all the prior transmission information so you are left with only the message itself. Then change the subject line so it doesn't read Fw: Fwd: [Fwd: [Fwd: Fwd. To do otherwise is inconsiderate of your recipients.

MAX TO THE MAX
My colleague, Aussie hospitality marketing guru Max Hitchins, has started a free e-mail newsletter that contains (in his words) "hot tips, secrets, tonics, remedies, scams and medicine in the hospitality industry." To get on the list, send him a note at http://www.hitchins.com.au/ht_samples.html.
