ELECTRONIC HOUSE CALL - December 11, 1998
WHAT TIME IS IT?
To be sure your computers will function in the year 2000, at the least you will need to reset the date and time on your
computer to see what happens when it rolls over. This leaves you with the problem of setting it back to the right time when
you are done. I found a nifty little utility that will tap into the US Navy's atomic clock and allow you to synchronize your
computer with the "official" time in the world. It isn't very big but will take 10-15 seconds to download. Netiquette says it is
inconsiderate to send long attachments to anyone without their prior approval. So . . . I will include it as an attachment to my
EHC next week UNLESS you tell me you prefer not to receive it!
CAKES REVISITED
A few more comments to the problem we looked at last week of parties bringing their own cakes into the restaurant:
From Luis Miguel Fresnedo in Mexico:
As a third approach to Glen Brailey's problem, we actually use his "problem" as a marketing tool, and a quite succesful one.
When trying to sell our place to a group of potential customers for a party or any other celebration, we let them know that
they can bring their own cake, and we'll be more than happy to store it for them and serve it with no extra charge
From Rudy Miick in Colorado:
The operator could charge a reasonable cutting fee, the guest will understand that, and then as you suggest, love the fact the
guests are in the place and make the experience as joyous for all as possible. By the way, I love your tongue and cheek on
Option #1... get rid of those ridiculous policies dudes and dudettes!
From Steve Miller in Massachusetts:
Many folks are imposing a service charge $.25-$1.00 or more per person, depending on market. Some include ice cream in
the charge. According to the Mass Restaurant Association, it is illegal to bring food into a licensed establishment in the state
but most make an exception for cakes. My daughter-in-law was married last weekend. The mother of the groom made the
cake and it was served (for a fee) by the restaurant where we had the reception.
GET YOUR LIFE BACK
My latest book is called "There's GOT to Be an Easier Way to Run a Business!" The book shines a light on the unconscious
assumptions most managers make -- notions that hinder effectiveness, increase stress and make the game of business less fun
to play. It suggests common sense alternatives that will allow you to be more effective with less effort . . . and get your life
back! You owe it to your company -- and your family -- to read this one! I will have them in January and copies are only
$14.95. Let me know if you are interested.
