ELECTRONIC HOUSE CALL - January 29, 1999

MORE SCAMS
Ken Burgin of Australia passes this one along:
Some time ago I remember a well-presented guy in a type of uniform came in and told the supervisor he was here to 'do the check of the fire extinguishers'. She had a certain latitude in this regard and said sure. They were taken out to the truck, brought back and eventually she was asked for the '$45 fee' ...which she paid. Caught!

The issue for Ken has to do with age, maturity and people being too trusting. In fact, the employees we value highly are often fresh, wholesome and somewhat innocent. They haven't been through the tough school (which also means they are less likely to steal or know how to steal from us). But we need to teach her (and others) how to be more cunning and less trusting -- in a sense, how to be tougher, harder and meaner. An interesting challenge on the training front!!

DON'T PASS IT ON
There are a lot of hoax messages floating around the Internet. To avoid perpetuating one of them, you can check out current hoaxes at http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/ or at the Computer Incident Advisory Commission, DOE: http://www.ciac.org (that's the big one!) Just a reminder that if you DO forward messages -- any messages -- the courteous thing to do is clip off all the names and prior addresses and send along only a clean message.

DO YOU NEED TECH SUPPORT?
One of the most comprehensive lists of hypertext links to sources of hardware and software vendors and online technical support is available at http://www.comspec.com/mfglist/. Just click on the first letter of your desired company and you'll get a list of manufacturers -- chances are your desired company is listed.

PAYROLL SOFTWARE REPORT
In response to Justin Doucette's dilemma reported last week, Karen Brown of Nathan's Famous reports that Lawson software will handle the situation described. Nathan's is converting to them now and are going live in April. Karen Cooley of Chez Pierre in Tallahassee thinks that Paymaster software should address the tip problem correctly. And Marty Konopko of GBS Consulting recommends Protym. Protym is a service bureau type setup not meant for individual store owners but rather someone like Marty that does processing for many business. You can check them out at http://www.protym.com.
