ELECTRONIC HOUSE CALL - June 11, 1999
THINK ABOUT IT
Last week I had the privilege of conducting full day training sessions with two restaurant groups in Southern California,
helping their managers get a new understanding of how to be more effective and get their lives back at the same time. I
received the following e-mail from one of the participants the next day: "I want to thank you for your inciteful and riveting
seminar. I started with some of your suggestions today at work. The response was very noticeable. I have a feeling that
once I stop worrying about what a good manager I am, I might actually become one."
A note from the Doc:
If you worried less about how you were doing . . . and just did the right thing, do you think you might also become a better
manager? One of my favorite quotes is from Paul Williams in his book, Das Energi. He says, "Nothing is more important
than doing what is right. That is so absurdly obvious that most people pay no attention to it. Most people seem to think that
what is obvious is beneath them. They pass up truth in favor of something more intellectually stimulating."
SPAM AND OTHER SORROWS
After sifting through scores of "Chicken Little" e-mails proclaiming everything from virus warnings to absurd legislation in
Congress, I came across another valuable site: http://www.scambusters.com/. They have free, detailed information about
many urban legends, hoaxes, and scams as well as some good suggestions as to how to reduce the amount of spam you
receive. Add this to the other two places I use to check things out before I pass them along:

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION
Are you feeling creative? Jan Pallottelli <massimo@intx.net> writes:
I am looking for a slogan for our restaurant, with out having to pay big advertising bucks or public relations firm. We have a fine dining establishment, the name of the ristorante is "Massimo" Ristorante Italiano. Some people have a really hard time pronouncing our name -- pronunciation is: MA (for mom), SI (Italian word for yes), MO (as in the 3 Stooges). Lets have fun with it. We would like to do a huge mailout with a slogan like Nike's Just Do It.
A note from the Doc:
As always, if you have any ideas, please send them directly to Jan with a copy to me and I will compile them. It will be
interesting to see if the collective wisdom can come up with a winner for her.
BY THE WAY
Thanks to everyone who responded to Greg and Trudy Fong's inquiry about handling complaints on carryout food. The
responses are summarized at http://www.restaurantdoctor.com/ehc/carryout.html.
