ELECTRONIC HOUSE CALL - July 2, 1999

WHAT DID I LEARN FROM MY LIFE THIS WEEK?
Immediately after putting the note in last week's issue about our trip to Prague, 1) I got word that the program I was scheduled to do over there had to be postponed, 2) my wife found out that a medical treatment program she was on had to be extended and 3) a number of questions came up around the new house we are building. The trip was no longer the obvious thing to do and I canceled our reservations. I admit to feeling a little disappointed but overall, it is a relief not to be going.

A note from the Doc:
My point in sharing this story is that just because you plan to do something (that makes sense at the time you plan it) does not mean that you have to hold to it against all evidence to the contrary. Things change and the flow often moves in other directions. It is easy to get stubborn -- caught in ego perhaps -- and hold to the original plan, even when it is no longer appropriate. The trick lies in being able to tell the difference between a shift in flow and an obstacle in the path.

As you may know, my corporate name is Effortless, Inc. and that is a commitment, not a cute name. I am not above hard work -- I work harder than most -- but I am seriously not into effort. Here's the way it looks to me:

When you are doing the right thing, everything seems to flow easily. Resistance is easily handled, resources appear as if by magic and the path seems to open itself to you. There is work to do, but it is a joy. On the other hand, when you are trying to force something to happen, it is a constant struggle. People fight you every step of the way, plans continually fall through and obstacles pop up everywhere. The process drains your energy and passion. You can prevail, but you feel hollow at the end.

How do you want to live your life?

There is a difference between going with the flow and having your body washed up on the beach! The best way to see if you are moving in the right direction is to simply quiet your mind and listen. When your mind quiets down, you tap into a flow of wisdom that is far deeper than anything you can access consciously. Trust what you hear -- it comes from the realm of insight and wisdom. When the next step is obvious, just take it. You will be amazed at how easily things will start to work for you.

Happy Fourth of July!
