NOTES ON RESPECT
Paul Martin writes"I agree with your point on diversity about the basic paradigm of respect. Genuine respect fosters cooperation, contribution, responsibility and
empowerment for ones own life."
John Correll writes"Your observation about the diversity movement being misguided is dead-bang on the mark. Ironically, instead of correcting the problems of prejudice and xenophobia, the diversity cult actually builds on them. It does so by failing to identify and address the root cause of those problems ? which is failure to view each person, first and foremost, as an INDIVIDUAL human being worthy of respect and dignity on the basis of his/her unique INDIVIDUALITY. Instead, diversity rhetoric builds on the opposite premiseThat a person deserves respect and special privilege because he/she is a member of a certain class or group. Viewing a person as a group member and demanding that he/she be accorded special status and privilege therefore, is the primal cause of our problems in the first place. If we are to resolve prejudice in the workplace, we must replace worship of the group with respect for each individual.
OOPS!
Even when you check things out first, occasionally you can get fooled. So it is with the Y2K "fix" I posted last week, the real story on which was just posted at
http://urbanlegends.about.com/library /weekly/mcurrent.htm?pid=2733&cob=home. (I feel a little vindicated that I sent my note out on 8/6 and the notice wasn't
posted until 8/11, but still . . .)
Making the change I mentioned will help make sure that dates are DISPLAYED properly as the year rolls over to 2000, but it does not change the way the underlying code handles the date change. According to Microsoft, "Windows will store and calculate the date as 4 digits, independent of the date display selected by the customer."
Duly embarrassed, I still think we have an obligation to check out anything before we send it. Please refer to my rant in the July 23rd EHC for sources to help verify what is real and what is not. You might want to keep it handy and forward it to those well-meaning friends who send you junk.
CAN YOU HELP?
Greg Fong in Canada writes "I am looking for software to help me plan work and production scheduling in the kitchen. As well I am looking for software to help
me purchase and maintain inventory. I would prefer to find something that works under a purchase order basis and that can handle multiple suppliers for common
commodities like chicken." If you have any ideas, send them to him at <gfong@fox.nstn.ca> .
THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES
We break ground on our new house this week! Exciting times. I hope your summer is productive and that you are making time for what is important to you.
