ELECTRONIC HOUSE CALL - September 17, 1999

LETTERS, WE GET LETTERS
Stella Pappas <CHDinerNB@aol.com> has a question:
How do we set up a delivery service for our customers? Is there computer software to help us identify customers and addresses when they call to place an order as well as keep a history? Has anyone used a local taxi company for delivery? What kind of fee arrangement was used? Any pros and cons to using this delivery method?

Lyn Greve <lyngreve@hotmail.com> asks:
My company is currently looking at developing some programs to help us increase the retention of our staff. One program we are considering is to develop levels of achievement which the employees would have to earn. An example involving servers would be to have them attend a quarterly in-house workshop, increase the number of guests they are able to recognize and possibly have to pass a test on job code standards. With each level they would be recognized in some fashion. I was wondering if you and your readers might have some information on some similar programs that other restaurants are currently using. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any insights to offer, please pass them along to these folks with a copy to me. I will compile the good stuff and report back.

MARKETING R US
Marketing maven Joel Cohen has just started a restaurant marketing newsletter. His first issue has some impressive information. An excerpt:

The magic answer to [impressive sales increases] is, in one word, "Wowable." Think about it! Everything you are, everything you do, everything you touch should be Wowable! I want this word to be part of your everyday vocabulary. Wowable! This is the KEY to building your sales. It could also be the key to your personal life, but that's for a different newsletter. I don't care if you have to go out and order buttons, banners, balloons or magnets with the word Wowable printed on it, or even get your butt tattooed, in order to remember that this word is the KEY! Now, if you don't get this concept, as we say in Texas, "ya ain't gonna make it." Wowable is the magic button that jettisons changes and puts you into an orbit to at least double your sales. Cautionthe only reason magic fails, is because of the magician.

There is much more, including some very specific suggestions. If you would like to receive Joel's words of wisdom more regularly, you can subscribe on his website at www.restaurantmarketing.com.
