ELECTRONIC HOUSE CALL - June 30, 2000

BOXES, ANYONE?
We moved into the new house this week and my life is piled to the ceiling in boxes. I just got the computer working this morning, at least partially explaining why I did not post the EHC yesterday.

YOU DELIVERED
Thanks to everyone who responded with delivery ideas for Barry Wolfman last week. I am continually struck by the willingness of people to share information for the benefit of others. Barry responded, "I got some very useful info. I was surprised at how much effort and time some of these folks put into assembling an informative response." As soon as I come up for air, I will compile the responses on my website.

THE SMOKING LAMP IS OUT
You may not get the symbolism of the headline -- it refers to an old Navy expression -- but sooner or later you will probably have to wrestle with the topic. From north of the border comes this note from Todd Hubley <thubley@ns.sympatico.ca>. He wrotes, "We have decided to go non smoking in our restaurant. Do have any tips on how to deal with concerned smokers that refuse to support our decision? Do you have any suggestions how we can convince them that this is the correct choice. Also, what percentage can we expect to lose vs the extra ones that we draw from this decision?"

As always, please respond directly to Todd with a copy to me.

LOOKING AHEAD
On July 14, we will head to Italy for three weeks. (The timing made more sense a year ago when we thought we were going to move in late April (!) but I suspect I will be ready to walk away from the pile by then.) As is my custom while on the road, I will post a daily diary of our travels on my website. This is an exercise in "what did I learn from my life today" -- not so much where we went and what we saw, but what I learned from it.

The trip reports from Europe ('97) and Australia/New Zealand ('98) are still available for browsing at www.restaurantdoctor.com/trips.html. My past excursions have generated some true insights and I suspect this time will be no different, particularly since we are traveling with a couple who own a French restaurant in Florida. The things we do in the name of research . . . !

Back to the unpacking! Ciao!
