The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Road Trip - Part 1

Autun was founded during the reign of the first Roman Emperor (by the Romans, no less!) and still retains many ruins, including two Roman gates and the theater, one of the largest in the western part of the empire. It seated 17,000 people in its day. In looking at it now, though, you have to wonder if they built it just to get a good view of the soccer games! On the main town square, the City Hall and Opera House suggest that Autun was an influential city in 1800 when these were built.

Arnay-le-Duc was a pleasant surprise -- a small town with some classic medieval architecture. The tower is part of La Motte Forte, a 12th century castle.

All along the road we passed small chateaux and medieval-looking villages. This would be a great place for a leisurely bicycle tour to give yourself time to check out more of these little spots.

fThe day was cold and the trees along the roads at (slightly) higher elevations were all frosted with what I assume was frozen mist. The effect was really quite pretty
