The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
The Road to Burgundy

We got to La-Charite-sur-Loire (our first stop in Burgundy) ahead of schedule. All our flights left on time and arrived 45 minutes to an hour early. Gotta love that! There is an inch or so of snow on the ground but the roads are clear and dry, so don't believe those horror stories about Europe being incapacitated by storms ... at least not today.

It is cold, though, particularly in our little stone apartment. The owners did a terrific restoration job on the place and the heaters help take some of the chill off, but I really wish the fireplace was functional. The apartment in Nolay (our next stop) should be a little cozier, but right now Margene is huddled up next to the heater wrapped in a blanket trying to read a book with shaking hands. Whoopee!

There wasn't much of anything in the pantry when we arrived, just a bottle of white burgundy in the fridge. Of course, all the shops are closed on Sunday in France but I did find one boulangerie (bakery) in our little town that was open. They had a few baked goods left and some basics (mainly coffee) so we are at subsistence level through the morning. We will hit the supermarket tomorrow and lay in a few supplies for the days ahead.

Since we are both a little punchy from flying all night, I think our raucous anniversary celebration (22 years today!) is going to look like bread, wine ... and an early bedtime under piles of blankets!

It is 5:00 in the afternoon as I write this. Our challenge now is just to stay awake long enough to put ourselves reasonably back on schedule. There is a 9-hour time difference from Seattle to France. If we go to bed now (as we are tempted to do), we would probably be wide awake at 2am! Not a good thing.

We did get a few photos today but I am too beat to try processing pictures tonight (and we didn't get here until late afternoon anyway), so I will let this brief narrative suffice for the day's offering and pick it up again tomorrow.

Bon Soir mes amis.
