The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Getting Settled in Nolay

We arrived in town just after noon. Before we even picked up the keys to the apartment we stopped into the Cafe du Centre for a quick lunch. As you can see from the photos, this place has been here forever ... and it has every bit of that historic warmth to it. Massive beams, low ceilings, funky stairs up to the kitchen and the lone restroom. It is located on the main square, right next to Les Halles, the ancient market hall built in the 14th century.

Our apartment is about 20 yards from Les Halles and has been completely restored with a sort of 1800's feel to it. Perhaps that is because the owner, a British ex-pat, is also an antiques dealer. We settled in, unpacked, and Margene assumed her typical position on the couch! At least the apartment has a good heater. The only downside is that our hostess has been in UK with her ill 88-year old father since early December and we are unlikely to meet her before we leave. Pity.
