The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
Beaune

Beaune is the heart of the Burgundy wine country and a magnet for tourists during the season. It does, however, have a great feel ... and a lot of antique shops. Fortunately, it also has a lot of restaurants that are open -- not all that easy to find in these parts right now.

The Hotel Dieu in Beaune was a 15th century charity hospital. The courtyard has the Burgundian tile roofs. The beds in the main hall were each occupied by two patients and tended by nuns. All this was a very advanced concept for its day ... although the medical practices of the time were still very medieval. You don't even want to think about the implements that the doctors used to treat disease.
