The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
April 24 - The Ming Tombs

After a quick lunch we headed for the Ming Tomb complex, a sprawling equivalent of Egypt's Valley of the Kings ... but no pyramids.

Not surprisingly, there is a real Olympic fixation in Beijing, with countdown clocks seemingly everywhere (106 days and counting, by the way). The new headquarters building of the Chinese Olympic Committee looks like a torch and the Olympic Stadium is certainly a controversial piece of architecture as well. Unfortunately, the city is losing much of its historic buildings -- at least the small scale ones -- to the demands of accommodating millions of new residents every year.
