The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
April 26 - First Impressions of Xi'an

When we arrived in the late afternoon, the city didn't look any too pleasant. We didn't know if it was fog, generally polluted air ... or what. We finally concluded that it was some serious air quality issues, unfortunately a common problem in the more populous cities of China ... of which there are many. Xi'an may seem like a backwater community, but it has a population in excess of 6 million!

The big surprise for me was how the city seems to come alive at night. It was a warm night and the public plazas were jammed with (primarily young) people that gave it a real party vibe -- more like I recall on a warm summer night in the US.
