The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
April 30 - Fengdu and Life on the River

Fengdu, the Ghost City

Because the Three Gorges Dam Project has raised the water level behind the dam by some 300 feet or so, the residential part of Fengdu had to be relocated to higher ground. You see new towns like this all along the river ... along with abandoned or soon-to-be-abandoned old homesteads that will be underwater when the final stage of flooding raises the water level another 75 feet.

The rest of the day passed quietly as we headed downstream. Among the pursuits: eating (breakfast was buffet, lunch and dinner were typical Chinese), napping, watching the river traffic and research into the nuances of Chinese wine.
