The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
May 8 - Getting to Know The Neighborhood

After relying on cabs to get us everywhere on this trip, it was a pleasant surprise to find that there was a major pedestrian-only shopping street right next to the hotel!

This place looked more promising than it turned out to be. The food was reasonably good and inexpensive enough but it seemed like the place was in a state of melt-down. One of the cooks went a little nuts, started smashing plates and got an early break. It appeared that the woman in the photo -- whose work station was a small table in the dining room -- had the job of making some sort of corn pancakes ... and also swatting flies. I didn't see if she used the flyswatter to flip the pancakes or the spatula to swat flies, but it was enough to get one nervous. Nobody seemed to be sick the morning after, so I guess we dodged another bullet!
