The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
A Down Day in Colmar

John Lennon once wrote that life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans. It seems like today was one of those days. Figuring out the heat in the apartment works has been a career in itself, the result being that it got unusually hot in the bedroom during the night ... and not in a good way! Apparently, that caused Margene's sinuses to dry out. She woke up at 2am feeling like she was coming down with the world's worst cold and couldn't get back to sleep.

She spent the day bundled up on the couch, running through our entire supply of tissues and sleeping off and on. The girl was down for the count. I felt fine but realized that several days of walking on irregular cobblestones had been harder than the average on my knee. A day of rest wouldn't do me any harm either. This is one of the advantages of renting an apartment over staying in a hotel -- at least we had a comfortable place to veg out and a kitchen for food and drink.

Being Sunday, the local grocery shop was closed, so I ventured out to the Marché Couvert for pastries, butter, ham and cheese ... enough to keep us going for the next day or two. The mob scene in the Marché convinced me that laying low on the Sunday before Christmas was as much a defensive move as it was a physical necessity.

When Margene feels ready to move again, we'll get out and about. In the meantime, I've got endless books on the Kindle and all the time in the world. Here's hoping she'll get on top of whatever it is that's got her down.
