The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
December 6 - (Almost) Around Lake Arenal

The main living area of Casa Manana is wonderfully homey ... perhaps because it is their home?

The Arenal area is home to a lot of dairy and cattle operations, some of which spill over onto the public roads. Unfortunately the clouds kept us from getting a clear view of the Arenal volcano. It is active and I am told that on clear nights you can see flaming bursts of lava blowing into the sky and pouring down its flanks. I imagine that must be spectacular! Maybe we will see it on the next trip.

My hare-brained idea to circumnavigate the lake didn't go too well. The road started off OK, got progressively rougher and finally ended in the river. It was a long way in ... and a long way back out. The photos don't even begin to show the condition of the road bed. It has forever changed my definition of what constitutes a rough road!
