The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
December 10 - Around Casa Turire

Once again we hit a dirt road, in this case about two miles of rocks from the main highway to the entrance to the hotel. The entry is an impressive drive up an allee of palm trees, but even this picturesque entry is a heavily rutted dirt track. I can understand the condition of the access road since that is a national road, but it makes no sense to me that a place like this wouldn't at least pave the roads on their own property.

The grounds are nicely landscaped and there are lots of activities for the guests ... if you are into activities. Rafting, birdwatching, hiking, plantation tours, volcano tours, hot air ballooning, mountain biking. I get tired just thinking about it. Of course, with the possible exception of the rafting, all these activities are a little less fun in the rain!

This giant mushroom is actually a huge ficus tree. Our room is the second balcony to the right of the tree. The Master Suite is a two-floor affair perched in the very top of the atrium. It always seems strange to see Christmas trees, snowmen and Santa figures in a tropical setting, but it is a Catholic country and that's what they do!

Most of our day was spent in one of these two spots. We had breakfast and lunch under the awning on the pool deck. Good thing, too, as it rained heavily while we were eating lunch. I spent most of the day on the patio with a good book, alternately watching the sun and the rain on the palms.
