The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
A Damp Day in Sarlat

The Sarlat Saturday market is the largest in the area. We were delighted to discover it purely by accident on our first trip here seven years ago. So we were looking forward to a second go ... but the weather wasn't cooperating.

The day dawned cool and rainy. The vendors were there but the crowd was more subdued and it didn't take long before walking in the rain lost its appeal, even in a town as picturesque as this one.

Eventually we all gathered under the awning of a cafe near the house and spent a few hours people-watching, nursing assorted beverages and eventually even diving into some lovely omelettes.

Fortunately, in our brief foray into the market, we picked up some rotisserie duck, roasted potatoes, bread, assorted cheeses and another five liters of wine, so the evening meal was handled. This left the rest of the day free to do what we would probably do on a rainy day at home -- take a nap, read and gather by the fire for munchies and conversation.

My big surprise of the day was an email from AT&T informing me that I had run up $1000+ worth of data charges and they had suspended my data plan! Considering that I had only been connected for an hour or so yesterday, this all seemed surreal. A long phone call produced a few plan adjustments that will mitigate the damages somewhat, but I can see some real arm-wrestling when I get home.

Plan B: I got a prepaid card from a French telecom company that will avoid having to pay roaming rates or overages. There is no WiFi access in this house so everything must be done via 3G Wireless signal ... or walk two blocks and hang out in a local coffee house. Had I known the convenience of working from home would be so expensive, I would have been making the commute down the street a lot sooner!
