The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur Down Under
October 24 - Sydney

Market City is a multi-story surprise on the edge of the Chinatown area.

Entrance to Market CityAtrium at Market City

The lower level is like an oriental street market -- a huge open area with vendors everywhere selling just about everything from clothing to fresh produce. Upstairs is more mall-like, with a high-energy feel to it. Lots of shops, a full-scale supermarket and LOTS of food -- sit-down restaurants, bars, bakeries, fish mongers and the list goes on.

Food Court at Market CityFood Court at Market City

The food court has a distinctly Pacific Rim feel to it with many Chinese food vendors (but also Greek, Turkish, Indian, Italian and most everything else.) The feature I hadn't seen before was the bar in the middle of the space (it's on the right side of the left-hand photo.)

Much as Rich Melman put a new twist on the food court idea with his "Food Life" concept in Chicago, I wonder how often our own thinking of "what something is" gets in the way of our seeing what it really could be. Might be worth a little reflection.
