The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur In Italy
May 25 - The Hill Town Tour

Gubbio was far too medieval for our taste. I suppose as a slice of history it helps put the past into perspective, but it lacked the warmth and charm that we have come to love about the central Italian hill towns.

The Italian way of death is interesting. These graves are in a little cemetery by an ancient church outside Cortona. We were surprised that the graves were all so recent (the oldest I saw was 1943 - most were within the last 20 years.) Each has a photo of the deceased and the flowers are fresh. Apparently the dead are well-attended by their families.

We really liked Montepulciano. Aside from the fact that they make awesome wine, the "feel" of the town was good and the streets were easy on the feet. We would have spent more time but the rains came . . . and we left!
