The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur In France
May 28 - Gray, Chateau de Rosieres

Gray Chateau

To the left, the bridge across the River Saône from the terrace at Restaurant Bellevue in Gray. The chateau on the right is now a museum in the town of Champlitte on the very northeastern edge of Burgundy.

Chateau de Rosieres Chateau de Rosieres Chateau de Rosieres

The oldest parts of the Chateau de Rosieres, very near to where we are staying, dates from the 13th century. It is being (very) slowly refurbished by the young couple that now owns it. They have two rooms that are available as B&B accommodations, one of which is shown on the right. There are spiral stone staircases, a dungeon, multiple fireplaces and massive beamed ceilings. Most fascinating to me is that the uppermost part of the building is set out from the main walls (notice that on the left-hand shot?) and the underside is left open. There is a walkway all around the top of the building that allowed the occupants of the chateau to drop rocks (or whatever) on attackers below. Seeing it up close and personal really makes you think about what life must have been like at that point in history.
