The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur In France
May 30 - Semur-en-Auxois, Flavigny-sur-Ozerain
This place is gorgeous! It is a medieval jewel high on a cliff over the river Armacon. The gateway was cut through the old wall in 1417 and the church dates from 1225.
The main portal shows the fortified nature of the town that grew from a Benedictine abbey founded in 719. The abbey is now used to manufacture little anise mints, the town's current claim to fame (in addition to its medieval and Renaissance homes.)
From a distance, Flavigny reminded us of an Italian hill town. Alas, the photos cannot capture the charm and unique feel of the place.
