The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur in Europe
July 31 - Chenonceau, Chanteloup

The Chateau de Chenonceau was started in 1556 and added to in stages over the next hundred years or so. During WWII, when the River Cher marked the boundary between free and occupied France, the kitchen was remodeled to aid in feeding patients in the hospital located in the Chateau. The kitchen is located in two of the wide "legs" extending into the river and despite the "modernization", you can still get a feel for what it must have been like in its original incarnation.

These photos show a huge rotisserie and one of several open fireplaces in the kitchen. This one also heats a stone baking oven.
