The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
April 29 - Ciao Gudiolo

Ciao to Gudiolo, our home away from home in Italy. Ciao, too, to our extended family for the week. It was great fun, gang. Thanks for all of it.

The day dawned foggy and almost surrealistic, but it was burning off as we all headed off in different directions.

Ciao Hildegard. Thanks for being "Mom" to us in the morning and getting breakfast organized each day. Ciao Dieter. Thanks for your sense of humor and willingness to assist me with wine research. Ciao Millers. Thanks for your wonderful energy and sense of playfulness. I'm glad that you are neighbors all year.

Ciao Juan Carlos and Sandra. Thanks for taking such good care of us ... and always with a smile. Your presence makes the experience so much more pleasant.

Ciao Gudiolo. The living room where we gathered for so many spirited conversations. The dining room where we enjoyed good company and Sandra's exceptional cooking.

Ciao to the kitchen where we packed in for breakfast each morning. The funky stairs to the upper floors where you hit your head on the beam half the time.

Ciao to the terrace where we passed so many lazy afternoons reading and watching the green change color on the hills. The pool where we threatened to take a dip but never did.

Finally, Ciao to the great view from this wonderful house. I will miss the expanse of the valley, the ancient buildings poking out of the trees, the sound of the cuckoos at dawn and dusk (yes, they sound just like the clocks) and Ciao to the awesome quiet on a warm evening that allows your mind to go to some very peaceful places.
