The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
May 7 - L'Isle sur La Sorgue Market

The town of L'Isle sur La Sorgue is criss-crossed by canals and branches of the Sorgue River (the name means "island on the Sorgue River") all of which were once used to power water mills which made the town a center for weaving is a pleasant contrast to the generally arid conditions in the rest of Provence. Sunday is market day in town ... and it is a regional event. I thought we had seen large European markets before, but this one took over the entire town! Here are a few shots that will give you a bit of the flavor of the morning. There isn't much more that has to be said!

The first shot in this series is the spot where the river first enters town and splits. I was particularly impressed with the two stone channels in the foreground which diverted water to power a couple of the old water wheels.
