The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
May 11 - Arles

In and around the Arles old town.

The Roman arena dominates the old town. There is also the remains of a Roman theater. Both were part of the strategy of keeping the locals entertained (for free) so they wouldn't revolt over Roman taxes.

The theater is being restored with a state-of-the-art sound system and lighting. I wonder what the Romans would have thought about that. Over by the river are the ruins of Constantin's baths, another Roman relic.

We had lunch outside (of course) right next to the arena. Decent food and exceptional people-watching. Not all the buildings in the old town are old. This is the Hotel de Ville (town hall) on the Place de Republique.

A few more shots around the old town to give you a feel for it. The city is located on the Rhone River, which I must say was impressive in its size. I still prefer the steady flow of the clean waters of the Sorgue as it passes by the front door of our little stone house.
