The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
November 30 - Auxerre and the Auchan Supermarket

The old part of town is a warren of pedestrian-only streets. This clock tower dates back to the 1500's. I liked the little carving details on the old timbers, something we also saw in Noyers.

More tastes of the old town. While the buildings date from around the same period, there is quite a different feel between Auxerre and Noyers.

Auchan is almost its own mini-mall. I already told you about the brasserie but there is also a pharmacy, optician, and several other legitimate shops run by others. The selection is vast and I was particularly struck by the width of the aisles in comparison to those in the US. Either space is cheaper here or the summer crush is unbelievable!
