The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
December 1 - Sights Along the Way

When we got up this morning, the surface of the canal was covered with ice ... as was our brave little Opel. That's our house on the far left of the picture.

The Thursday market in Ancy le Franc is set up just outside the Chateau. The town itself was rather non-descript so we did not feel any compulsion to stick around for long.

The gite La Petite Forge in Buffon is located on the Armancon River and was the site of an old forge. The owner, Jean-Louis, has renovated one of the old buildings into two rental units.

The town of Montbard, where we stopped for lunch, seemed like an interesting place to explore. It was larger than most but without any significant traffic, so we could wander a bit more easily. We also found several delightful old estates tucked into the trees along the river. All in all, a very civilized area.

The Chateau de Tanlay dominates the center of town. What we first took as the chateau turned out just to be the gatehouse. The main castle is hidden away behind high walls, but offered some enticing peek-a-boo views. The chateau is surrounded by a moat which must have been primarily for show since the building was built in the early 1700's when protection from marauding forces was no longer necessary.
