The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
December 3 - Around the Neighborhood

The weather has warmed up some, bringing with it the rain. Since we leave for Geneva in the morning, we devoted the morning to exciting things like laundry. The house has a washer and dryer that do a great job ... and faster than their Italian counterparts. Actually, I have never seen a clothes dryer in Italy, so I am guessing on that count but Italian washing machines take hours to run a load!

We had leftover pizza from last night's dinner and various odds and ends in the fridge, so we opted for yet another indoor picnic. I do miss checking out the local restaurants, but the selection seems pretty slim around here ... and I could do to lost a few (dozen) pounds anyway!

The rain let up after lunch so we took a walk down the canal ... just because we could. Although it is warmer than our first few days, the damp just cut through us so the circuit was a quick one. So we warmed up the car and did the American thing -- went exploring and burned up some fossil fuel.

We got another angle on the Chateau de Tanlay and after a brief foray into the countryside (where we didn't see any villages of particular visual interest), we came back to Tonnerre to see what sights there were to see. We wandered a bit, stopped for pastries (the French have THAT art down cold!) and scurried back to our cozy house by the canal as the sun set somewhere above the overcast.

We still couldn't find out if the local restaurant was open -- it seemed to be last night when we got back into town but it looks deserted today and none of the local merchants seem to know the hours. (Marketing doesn't seem to be a local restaurant skill!) At the least, it wouldn't open until at least 7pm. While we were sitting around the house trying to figure out if we wanted to walk down there and hope it was open ... we decided to pass on dinner altogether!

So my experience with french dining, at least on this trip, has been very limited ... but we will not have a kitchen in Italy and I know what to expect for food there! We will eat well before we get home!
