The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
December 7 - Montalcino

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. As a start, the morning dawned bright and clear with a little fog hanging in the valleys. That was the good news. The bad news is that the bug that kept Margene from going out last night was still with us, so instead of a tour it was a day of recovery for her ... and a day of mostly dining for me.

In my book, the only thing worse than being sick is being sick by yourself, so my forays outside the hotel were limited to meals. The rest of the time I stayed with my child bride and devoured an excellent book -- Whiteout by Ken Follett, one of my acquisitions in Geneva. That brings me down to one unread novel, so depending on how the time goes from here, I may be searching for another shop with a selection of books in English. Perhaps at the airport in Rome or Copenhagen.

Margene was feeling better by the end of the day -- not up to dinner but at least her stomach was not doing acrobatics. We can thank the Cipro we got in Peru last year. It is a prescription drug in the US but readily available over the counter in South America. Better living through chemistry ...

Tomorrow we head for Todi in southern Umbria. We stayed in that area on our trip in 2001 and we are scouting for a house for our return visit in late April 2006 with John and Suzanne Miller from Gig Harbor (founders of the Affordable Travel Club) and friends of theirs from Austria.

Ciao for now.
