The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
December 8 - Bits and Bites

For breakfast we did the city sort of thing and walked down the street to the local cafe for coffee and pastries. Normally we are staying in houses out in the country. While I like the privacy, ease of parking and the quiet, it is sure nice to be within walking distance of anything you might want.

A detour through the town of Marsciano turned up a holiday market -- and Italian markets are always a magnet for Margene. For my part, I know that at any Italian market there is usually a truck selling porchetta, whole roasted pig, sliced to order and served either in bulk or on a flaky roll. Sure enough, we found the truck ... and the lunch question was answered.

Francesca prepared dinner for us tonight. Bruschetta with tomato and olives, followed by a pasta course of lasagna in a pastry shell (interesting idea.) Then saltimbocca, a skewered rollade sort of combination of, I think, beef, ham and pate accompanied by grilled potatoes. For dolci, a chocolate covered, cream-filled panna cotta. The wine was a Novello Falo, a young wine of Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. I gather this is roughly equivalent to the idea of Beaujolais nouveau from France. All in all, a delightful meal ... and since there is no need to get in the car and drive, I think I'll finish that bottle of wine!
