The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
December 11 - Back to Copenhagen

All good things must end, so with much hugging we said goodbye to Francesca and headed to the Rome airport to catch the flight to Copenhagen. The airport is only about two hours from Todi ... a lot easier drive than our usual five-hour run to Milan.

Arriving in Copenhagen at 2:45, we only had about an hour of daylight left. Had we been much farther north, we wouldn't even have had that! By the time we got to our hotel, the sun was nearly set. So we dropped our bags and set off to see what we could see of the city at night. I had been in Copenhagen about 25 years ago, but my memory isn't all that good. Still, we managed to find out way down to the pedestrian-only shopping streets, from there to the city hall square and from there to the Christmas Market at Tivoli.

Tivoli is the oldest amusement park in Europe and is just a magical place. My first visit here was in late October, so the park was closed. If we hadn't caught it close to Christmas, it would have been closed on this trip as well. Instead, it was alive with half the population of Copenhagen! We were expecting temperatures below freezing, but instead found it in the low 40's -- not exactly shirtsleeve weather, but it definitely made for pleasant strolling

The photos can only hint at the fairyland quality of this special place. Next time we visit, it will be in the summertime! A short 20-minute walk and we were back at the hotel. Margene had enough to munch on as we wandered through Tivoli so she settled in with the TV while I hit the hotel restaurant. Wouldn't you know that it was Italian!

When we were in France, most of our meals were Italian. In Italy, of course, there was no option (restaurants in Italy only serve Italian food!) So of course, my last meal of the trip ... in Copenhagen ... would have to be lasagna!
