The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
April 30 - Around Burgundy

The Hotel Dieu kitchen gives an insight into 15th century institutional cooking. Some of the equipment does not look all that different from what we would find today (I love the gooseneck faucets), but fortunately we do not have to cook in open fireplaces any more!

Lunch at a sidewalk cafe in Beaune. The area to the right was served by the Hotel La Concorde Brasserie and offered cafe cuisine. The area to the left belonged to a fast food sort of place serving, among other things, burgers and fries. We opted for lunch at the former, accompanied by a small pitcher of the local red.

As we wound our way back toward home, we ran across the Restaurant de L'Auxois in the town of Vandenesse en Auxois, near Chateauneuf. It was the best meal of the trip so far ... and very reasonably priced. Subscribers to my Home Remedies newsletter should look for several cool ideas that I saw at this well-run local eatery.
