The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 7 - Around Brittany

St. Malo is across the bay from Dinard where we are staying. Since it was close, we thought we sould take a look at the old town. The city wall is still intact but the town was seriously bombed during WWII and many of the half-timbered buildings destroyed. The town was rebuilt in stone but has lost a lot of the ancient charm.

One of the big tourist magnets in this area is le Mont St. Michel. Since we were close, we thought we would at least drive by and take a photo. Here it is! As I have mentioned in previous travelogues, we are travelers, not tourists, and there were just too many tour busses in the parking lot for my taste. On the right is Genie's idea of heaven -- a linen shop in a foreign country. At least the purchases are easy to pack!

Brittany is also the site of many prehistoric stone formations. This is one type, called a menhire (men-ear). Others are more like what you see at Stonehenge in England. All of these were apparently created around the same time. Being near the coast, the area can also be quite windy and there are windmills everywhere. Most are inactive, but a few still bravely spin on.
