The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 15 - The Road to Languedoc

There is not much to say about a five-hour road trip except that it is over. Once we left the Dordogne area, the landscape and architecture turned truly boring. It reminded me of driving through rural North Carolina -- no slam intended, just scattered villages of no particular architectural interest. As we approached the Languedoc, however, the charm of the little stone villages started to return.

We are staying in the little village of Cessenon, about half an hour west of Beziers, in the mountains but fairly near the Meditteranean coast. They are also just a three-hour drive from the Spanish border. Our hostess is a member of our ATC group, Joyce Emerson, a truly lovely lady with a home on the side of the mountain above town. She is in the final construction phases of a new house and expects to move in mid-June, so we are the last guests here.

She greeted us like long-lost family (a welcome we appreciated after five hours in the car!) and we camped out on her back terrace for hours getting acquainted. She then laid out a wonderful dinner of potato salad, poached salmon, meats and cheeses. We contributed a bottle of wine from the stash and we carried on well into the evening. She has agreed to come and play with us tomorrow for our last full day in France.
