The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 16 - Minerve

The ancient village of Minerve sits above the Cesse River gorge fairly close to where we are staying. The town was a stronghold of an early Christian group known as Carthars. Cartharism started in the tenth century and by the twelfth century had become a relevant social power in the Languedoc region. This caused distress to the Roman Catholic Church (becaused the Carthars had a different religious belief) and so the Pope undertook a crusade to wipe them out. In 1210 the town was captured by Simon de Monfort and the residents slaughtered.

A few looks around Minerve. The monument on the right is a memorial to the Cathars who were killed in 1210.

Coming back from dinner at the pizzeria, we caught a great angle on the village of Cessenon.
