The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
May 17 - Around Gatwick

Our first attempt at dinner was Ye Olde Six Bells, a thousand year-old pub. Perhaps the sign out front should have been a clue, but the entire place was in melt-down, to a point where they actually closed the kitchen for an hour or so. In an English pub, you order your food at the bar. When I tried to place an order at 8:20, I talked with a man who had put in his order at 7:10 and still had not seen his food. Since Margene was in risk of falling asleep on the table if we did not eat soon, we left the Six Bells to figure out how to eke out another thousand years and opted for another place we saw on the ride over.

We spent the night at The Lawn Guest House about five minutes from the Gatwick airport. For dinner, we ultimately ended up at the Corner House Guest House just down the road. The menu was nowhere near as interesting as what the Six Bells promised ... but at least the Corner House delivered on its promises.
