The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur
February 15 - Stuttgart

Today we said goodbye to the little breakfast room at the Altfrankische Weinstube in Rothenburg. Continental breakfasts have been substantial, with meat, cheese, cereal, breads, yogurt, jams and plenty of other goodies.

We went to dinner at the restaurant that won the Innovation Award. While Florian was parking the car, Margene and I went in and were told by a waiter that, "We are completely full. We cannot seat you" as he breezed through an empty bar area. Florian arrived and talked the hostess/owner into seating us ... in a dining room with several empty tables. The menu was, in fact, innovative but they need to do a little innovation on their service.

In the dining room was what looked like a window in a home, but the view was to the restaurant kitchen. I thought this was an interesting way to bring the cooks more into the dining room without investing in a full exhibition kitchen. After dinner -- which was really more of a tasting than a meal -- we headed off to a club called Mash (photo) to meet Florian's brother for a drink. This place has an interesting, if abbreviated, menu and does a strong lunch business.
