The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
January 21 - Surprises on the Span

Our hotel is at an exit off the A4 Motorway a short distance from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. There is also a dining complex at this exit built, in the best European space-conserving fashion, spanning the highway. There is the ubiquitous KFC and Burger King, but also a Sushi Bar, fairly upscale BBQ joint, a sandwich shop, a US diner-like restaurant ... and The Place. The Place is essentially a cafeteria, but done in a very open market style with a lot of attention to presentation and fresh preparation. I was impressed.

I found food prices generally quite high and since I wasn't all that hungry anyway, I opted for a small burger at Febo, essentially a sandwich shop but with a decent selection of hot sandwiches as well. They had a second section downstairs where I had to go (and pay separately) to get an order of frites (french fries) to take back to Margene. The norm here (and in Belgium) is to serve them with mayonnaise! They also had an automat section, a concept I haven't seen for years. Perhaps its making a comeback?
