We are staying at the Taj Gateway Hotel, part of the Taj Hotels chain. It was once the best hotel away from the ghats but that had more to do with the pathetic competition than any superior features. The rooms have been renovated over the years, however, and ours was quite comfortable (if surprisingly devoid of information about hotel services or local attractions). Their foodservice is still regarded as the best in town ... although the town itself is not noted for its culinary finesse!
I can't convey the chaos of Varanasi in photos ... although despite the continual noise of honking horns and the madness of traffic, there was a strange sort of calmness in it all. The spiritual influence perhaps? Whatever the dynamic, it all seems to work.
