The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
January 27 - Around Old Delhi

You have heard of New Delhi, of course, but there couldn't be a NEW Delhi without an OLD Delhi. The original part of the city is still surrounded by a crumbling wall and three of the old city gates are still intact. Inside those walls is a warren of tiny lanes jammed with rickshaws, shops, people, critters and chaos. Somehow there is electrical power but when you take a look at the wiring maze, it makes you wonder how it all could possibly happen without regular electrocutions.

On the left, the view of the Lahore Gate to the Red Fort this morning. On the right, a photo of the same gate borrowed off the Internet. Now you know why recycled shots often help tell the tale a little more clearly.

The Red Fort was the seat of Mughal power from 1639 to 1857.

Nearby the Red Fort are two significant religious centers. The Digam-Bar Jain Temple is immediately across the street from the fort and a few blocks away is the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India and the third-largest in the world.
