The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
January 30 - Seein' (Some of) Jaipur

High on a hilltop above Jaipur is Jaigarh (Tiger Fort). Like most we have seen thus far, it had not only a military purpose but was the site of a royal residence. (I suppose the Maharajas liked the idea of a little household security as much as we do!) The palace in Tiger Fort had nine quite ornate self-contained royal apartments ... and a damn fine view of Jaipur!

Also on the tour today was the Amber Palace, an amazing structure situated along the pass that invading armies always took when moving on Jaipur. By the time we got up here Margene was not feeling well, so we opted not to make the climb up to the palace itself. I am told that you can ride an elephant up to the palace but we didn't see any around ... at least there. When we got down to the Lake Palace, there were decked-out camels and elephants just across the road, although for what purpose I don't know. The water level in the lake is quite low now, the result of continued drought conditions in this largely arid part of India.
