The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
February 3 - Around Udaipur

There is something wonderfully decadent about sleeping for nearly eleven hours! We were certainly in need of some serious sack time and took our time getting ready to face the day.

If we eat breakfast we don't usually want to eat again at noon but by the time we finally got moving we were well past time for breakfast. So I thought it would be lovely to have lunch at the Lake Palace. To even be allowed inside you must be a guest or have a reservation in the restaurant. No problem, right? When I called to reserve, I was politely advised that there was a per person minimum of 2500 rupees each. This equates to a starting tab of about US$110! Apparently the economy isn't depressed for everyone ...

Not being one to drop $100+ on lunch, we looked for a better local option. Margene's stomach is not doing that well with Indian food, so the project was to find a "safe" place with a more Continental menu. A little research turned up the oddly-named Savage Garden as a likely choice. It appeared to be somewhere reasonably close but finding it turned into the adventure of the day.

We really like it here. The town is much cleaner than most we have been in. Still a bit frenetic, of course, but that is life in India. There is just a nice vibe to the place and it will definitely be on our list if we ever pass this way again. Who knows? By then we might even have saved up enough for lunch at the Lake Palace!
