The Daily Diary of a Wandering Restaurateur
February 3 - Bill & Genie Do Lunch

We knew that the Savage Garden Restaurant was affiliated with the German bakery so we stopped in there to ask directions. They gave us a little map, a few general directions and off we went. Down to the lake, through the narrow alleys, past the donkeys, past the tailor, past the temples, past the pump where much of the neighborhood gets its water and eventually up a tiny footpath to the restaurant.

I am not sure we would have actually found the place but we had barely started our trek when we were approached by Gisela Bortoli, a German visitor who was in Udaipur for a month and a half. She was in the bakery, heard us ask about the restaurant and offered to show us where it was. She stayed and chatted with us through lunch, even introduced us to the owner, a fellow German. Gunther Norrenberg also owns the bakery and The Tiger Hotel and Spa in town. We had a nice chat about the challenges of serving a transient market in times of low tourism.
