The daily diary of a wandering restaurateur In Italy
July 19 - Pompeii/Rome
On the left is a 2000-year old fast food stand. It was located right on the street behind one of the public baths. The holes in the counter held the pots of food (although I don't know what a typical menu would have looked like.) The shot on the right is of a restaurant. Notice that the food holding facilities are the same, but this was enclosed with finer artwork on the walls and much more space.
The photo on the left is of one of the local bars, circa 79AD. The right also shows a local bar (nearly two millenia later.) You can see the difference. I suspect the food had to have been better (and the service orientation better) in the former than in the latter tourist trap!
