July 19 - Pompeii/Rome

Some of the homes in Pompeii are remarkably intact. The shot on the left is of the House of Vetti, two merchant brothers who were into porn in a big way (the wall coverings are rather remarkable!) The photo is of an interior courtyard. On the right is Mt. Vesuvius -- the start of the problem -- as we saw it from Sorrento.

Lest we forget, the price we pay for having Pompeii in its present condition is measured in human life. These bodies are among thousands caught in the eruption without even enough time to run. Some were caught in mid-flight and many simply died in their sleep. Apparently it was an incredibly quick event.
